Greenhouse Cultivation in Quebec

Before the 2000s, greenhouse tomato production in Quebec took place mainly in the spring and summer. During the winter, tomatoes sold in stores came almost exclusively from imports.
In the 2000s, the greenhouse industry began to modernize. Some companies started producing year-round, but on a small scale, as energy costs were very high. From 2015 to 2020, thanks to technological advancements (LED lighting, geothermal energy, automation) and government support, several producers began offering Quebec-grown tomatoes 12 months a year.
Today, it is common to find Quebec greenhouse tomatoes in supermarkets year-round.
